The new photvoltaic system eonvens sunlight directly into olociriciiv which is then used in .'conventional form. The 'photovoltaic svstem uses thin sluvs of silicon dioxide to collect the sun's energy. The solar -'photovoltaic svstem at Natural.-' Bridges uses about a (piarier of a million of these silicon dioxide cells. Each cell produces a positive and "neu'aiive force. A loop of wire coiinociinu the two sides of the tvll allows electrons to flow hoiwccn the two forces to balance the charge.; This flow of electrons is electricity. The elect rich v. generated by these cells is I hen conducted to a hatKM-v and equipment build- ini where energy is stored and released as needed. The monument expects to use eneriiv from this system 80-90 of the time. The dedication of the svstem will take place June 7, 1980.
