Show City to Ponder New library Site Representatives of the Park City Library Board will appear before City Councilmen tonight. to-night. April 3, to formally request that the Miner's -Hospital be officially set aside as a future home for the Public Library. Library Board members were reluctant to move the facility off Main Street but have determined no feasible alternative site for the facility exists along the historic street. The present facility, although - historically charming, is unfortunately un-fortunately only one third the size recommended for a library in a community of Park , City's, present, let alone, future population. Currently, the Public Library contains 3 . 200 valid volumes and state standards recommend a col" lection of at least 10,000. Many libraries in communities of smaller population have even larger collections. The Library Board would eventually like to see the facility developed as a significant signifi-cant community center to broaden the educational horizons hori-zons of all Park City residents. The Board feels that the hospital represents an excellent excel-lent location for such a facility to be developed. The Miner's Hospital was given to the people of Park City some time ago but only recently moved from its original location near the ' Resort to a new home in the Citv Park. The Citv has committed to renovate the ; historic structure but has vet j to determine a use for the facility once the work is completed. Library Board members - as well as many other citizens feel that the building, when renovated, should be used as a public center for all Park City rather than for municipal office space. They feel that if the Library is located in the building, that purpose will be achieved. ' The proposal to Councilmen was discussed along with several other items of business busi-ness at the regular meeting of the Library Board held last Thursday at the Library. At that meeting, particular concern was expressed over the number of periodicals now received at the facility. Apparently Ap-parently the Library now only subscribes to only seven periodicals while other libraries librari-es in similar population areas take at least 0. In order to bolster Park City's magazine and newspaper collection, the Board decided to initiate a subscription campaign within the community whereby citizens citi-zens would be asked to donate subscriptions to the library. Tina Lewis has drafted a list of approximately 50 magazines and newspapers which the library would like to receive. Persons interested in donating a subscription should either call or drop by the library next week once the campaign gets underway.. . . The Board also discussed a day set aside for classification and cataloguing the entire library collection which has been set for April 1 6. On that day. State Library personnel will aid the local; board in classifying all the books in the library as well as affixing dewey decimal numbers on the book spines. The decimal numbers will be put into a card catalogue which the librarv now lacks. New policies regarding library lib-rary hours, fines, library cards, etc. are expected to be forthcoming at the next regular meeting April 10. |
