Show PRESIDENT TAFT'S TRIP TO WEST SS NOW ' WELL DEFINED ; Amon the Gatherings He Will Attend Is the G. A. R. Encampment at Sail Lake City He Will Visit Alaska-Yukon Exposition, and Include in His Itinerary the South-West, and Perhaps the Heart of South Cost Will Be at Least $15,000 Washington, April 17. President Taft, who believes that the chief magistrate mag-istrate of the nation should keep In as close touch with the people as the duties and requirements of the office admit, Is planning a notable Hip during dur-ing the late summer and early autumn, aut-umn, provided congress decides to continue the annual appropriations of $25,000 for traveling expenses allowed allow-ed during the closing years of tho Roosevelt administration. The plans for the summer, as far as into the I heated term as August 15, have been completed. Mr. Taft will leave Washington Wash-ington as soon as he can arrange matters mat-ters after the adjournment of congress and has been told that tho extra session ses-sion will end June 1. The President will go direct from the White House to his summer home at Woodbury Point, Beverly, Mass., and will spend two months or more theie as quiet-1 quiet-1 and as free from official worry as possible. An outline of the proposed itinerary has been given to a high railroad official, of-ficial, ami an estimate requested. It J is said the cost would not be much over $15,000 to $17,000. If he goes West at all. the President will include a trip from Seattle on the revenue cut- ter service. The President has been Invited to the far north territory. In addition to his proposed visit to the Rocky Mountain states, and to j th Pacific coast, the President's tentative ten-tative plans for the trip include a. Many vessels of the Pacific fleet, j including eight fine armored cruisers j of the type of the North Carolina and 1 Montana, which Mr. Taft used on his ; recent trip to Panama, will be sta- ! tioned in and about Puget Sound dur- j lug the exposition, and the President j undoubtedly will make the trip to Alaska on one of these. They believe with the President that such a tour as he proposes to make, should be regarded re-garded as an essential factor In the universal desire to keep the people in clotc touch and sympathy with the central government. President Taft makes no secret of his fondness for travel. Ho believes I It to be tho only way of obtaining a proper idea and perspective of such a big country. Mr. Tart's stay at Beverly will bo interrupted by a few short trips to fill speaking engagements he has already made, and others which he has under consideration.
