Reading eased slightly at the outset however, the first sale of 4,- 000 shares at 91 1-2 to 91 3-4 compar-Ig compar-Ig with yesterday's final price of 92 1-2. Motor oils steels and textiles were prominent in tho further rise. U. S. Steel, whoso directors meet after the close of the market for acfion on the quarterly dividend, made only a fractional gain. Preliminary quotations quota-tions for exchange on London indicated indi-cated further heaviness. The market reacted moderately in the first hour, General Motors making an extreme reversal of five points. Selling pressure at that period was ascribed to weakness of exchange and tho proposed retroactive eighty per' cent war tax. All losses were recovered recov-ered before noon, coaf shares leading, the rebound. Reading extended over 3 points from yesterday's best, while the first and second preferred issues rose about S points.. Related coalers, notably Central of New Jersey, Delaware Dela-ware and Hudson, and Delaware, Lackawanna Lack-awanna and Western, were 3 to 5 points higher and other rails gained 1 to 3. Pools continued active in oils, equipments, steels and textiles. Call money was freely offered at 7 per cent. Buying of rails abated at mid-day, trading in equipments, steels and oils becoming more active. Baldwin. Fresh advances ad-vances in the corn market today resulted re-sulted from continued rainy weather and from indications; that Europe was till after rye and wheat. Both France I and Great Britain were said to be out of the market, but other trans-Atlantic countries appeared to refrain anxious bidders. On the upturns in the corn market, however, profit taking on the part of holders was much more in evidence evi-dence than was the case yesterday. Opening quotation which ranged from unchanged figures to 1 cents higher, with May $1.7-1 1.7-1 and July $1.66 1.67, were followed by a moderate reaction and then by new rallies. Oats climbed to new high record prices, but then sagged as a result of sales to realize profits. After opening 9i off to higher, Including July at 8990, the market eased back. Provisions were decidedly unsettled. Lard declined sharply after a steady opening.
