Good asphalt streets aro necessary, though busses do not lncreaso the cost of road upkeep. Cost of a bus lino is about tho same as a strot car lino and It gives better bet-ter and faster service. Chicago has one bus lino, from the downtown "loop" out Michigan boulo-vard boulo-vard and Sheridan road 19 miles round trip. Anothor lino Is to bo started through tho South Side. Profit $10,188. Officials of tho Chicago Motor Bua Co. say tho bus lino in 1910 earned a profit of $40,188; and they look for a 1920 profit of $70,000. The company has 60 motor busses. Only 3G havo boon in operation through tho winter, but all will soon bo in use. A 10-cont faro Is charged, competing compet-ing with the 8-cent elevated faro and tho C-cont faro of the surfaco lino. A now typo of bus, doublo-docked with enclosed top, Is being put Into service. It has CO seats. Tests show that this bus earns 30 por cent more rovenuo than the old open-top typo because all the seats aro avallablo in all klnd3 of weather. Tho new typo bus can bo built for $10,000 or less.
