Show iETHOOf STSTj! 011 lllfl ll iill 11 SYRACUSE, N. Y.f April 26. Rev. Dr. Edmund Mills, acting secretary; for the general conference of the! Methodist Episcopal church, which opens Saturday at Des Moines, Iowa, I stated tonight that the conference pro-j bably would revise the ban on amuse-j ments, changing it from a mandatory act In the Dook of Discipline to a word of advice. i Memorials submitted to Dr. Mills fiom country-wide conferences show' that about one-third of tho preachers want to eliminate all reference to dancing, theatres and card-playing, with others uncertain as how to deal with the proposition. In view of the fact that the preach ! ers do not put men and women on I trial for these amusements, Dr. Mills, will move elimlnatloa of the following ! 'words in that part of the Book of j Discipline dealing with tho trial of ai member for Impudent conduct: "Dancing, playing at games of I chance, attending theatres, horse I races, circuses, dancinjj -parties, patronizing pat-ronizing dancing schools or taking part in such , other amusements as are obviously of misleading and questionable ques-tionable moral tendency. "For such offense the law calls for first roproof by pastors, secondly, reproof re-proof by pastor and class leader or discreet' members of tho church and for the third offense the accused shall be brought to trial." , After striking out the words refer- red to Dr. Mills would have a star placed at this point dealing with trials making it compulsory for the ministers minis-ters to read tho "chapter on amuse-! amuse-! ments" under the head of "adYlce." |
