Show MEN UNTRUE TO THEIR UNIONS. That tho labor unions of Chicago have been imposed on by members of the organizations is the opinion of the Salt Lake Tribune, as expressed in tho following comment on the Indicting In-dicting of walking delegates; "It Is said that 100 or more business busi-ness agents of labor unions are to be indicted in Chicago as tho result of a grand jury Investigation. The charges Include bribery, accepting bribes, conspiracy con-spiracy and slugging affairs. It Is said these agents have secured hundreds hun-dreds of thousands of dollars by "shaking down" employers who wished wish-ed to avoid trouble and paid blackmail black-mail when strikes were threatened. Indictment of these men cannot bo considered as an attack upon organized organ-ized labor, for if those agents are guilty of blackmailing employers they have been doing the cause of unionism union-ism almost Irreparable injury. It no doubt qulto frequently happens that . when the unions have legitimate cauBe for complaint they are sold out by tho men who conduct negotiations . for them, but as a usual thing when the grafters plan a "shakedown" they trump up a complaint and work their scheme without the members of the i union being aware of what is going i on. This Is one of the meanest and . most dangerous forms of graft, and if the Chicago business agents are ' guilty they should be severely pun- 1 ished, for they have betrayed their ; unions for personal gain." , |
