Show UP TO THE DRAFTED MEN. It is naturally very mortifying to a young man and to his relatives and friends to find his name published in a list of so-called "slackers" when the facts are that, hav- ing already volunteered and being in the service, he had felt it unnecessary to take further notice of the fact that he had been drafted. Many such instances have occurred, and though always regrettable, it should be made plain that the drafted man himself, or some one representing him in the event that he was absent through having been stationed somewhere else, is at fault. Only yesterday m a list of delinquents said to have been turned over to the police appeared the name of a well known young man who B for months has been in the National Guard, and who trans- erred from that organization some weeks ago to the quartermasters corps, and who now is in honorable ser- vice with that corps in one of the South Atlantic states. His name in connection with these loyal activities has been published in the Salt Lake papers a score of times, and his picture, singly as well as in a group with his associates, has been printed more than once. Yet after all this he comes in for the unhappy distinction of having himself advertised as a citizen so unpatriotic that the aid of the police has to be invoked to bring him to a sense of his duty. It is within the knowledge of hundreds of his ac-. ac-. quaintances that he is thus made the victim of humiU- ation and injustice, but there may be other hundreds who, H "being unacquainted with the facts, will put the worst con- struction upon the incident, and will probably say or think that the disagreeable publicity which he is getting is just H what he deserves. Once for all, let it be understood that the Salt Lake ex- animation and exemption boards are not required to con- sider rumor or hearsay or published stories or even their H own knowledge as to the personal status of those sum-H sum-H nioned before them. Upon the latter rests the whole re-H re-H sponsibility of bringing their case to official observation. , R will be remembered that even failure to receive notice of their names having been drawn does not furnish any excuse for men's failure to respond. The law assumes this much as to their intelligence, that knowing they are registered and are therefore liable to call, they will keep themselves so closely in touch with the progress of the B draft that they will be on hand when their turn comes, H notice or no notice. It is still more evident that, having H been drafted though they may be already in the service, H their business is to make the showing which shall elimin- ate them from the further operation and authority of the H local board. H Probably there are few remaining instances under the H first draft unfortunately there have been a considerable H number where these explanotions need apply. But they H will apply with equal force to future units, and they H should be heeded by all who desire to escape the unpleas- H ant notoriety that may come from a simple neglect or H; misunderstanding.
