Smoke detectors, fire extinguishers and other fire prevention equipment will be on display and for sale, David Bentley, City Fire Marshall, stated. All week long, radio programs have featured several of the fire department depart-ment personnel who have highlighted several aspects of home fire safety. Plenty of handout material will be available Saturday, he added. Bentley suggests, as do several of the handouts, a family can plan now to survive in the event of a home fire. TThgj can be accomplished by having a night fire escape plan for every member of the family, plotted out so each knows the route. Alternate escape routes are also suggested. Fire drills are an excellent means of aquainting members with procedures, using both primary and alternate routes. All exits windows should be checked periodically to make sure they work freely; get your family in the habit of sleeping with the bedroom doors closed - this can hold back flames long enough for an escape; as part of your family planning, an assembly point outside should be decided upon. |
