Show Columbia Takes Two Game Lead in Little League I Fred Esplin of Columbia Iron Mines turned in one of the top performances of the year .Tuesday .Tues-day evening in the Little League baseball race scoring a 1 to 0 TEAM STANDINGS Columbia . 5 0 1.000 Lions 3 2 .600 Milne 3 2 .600 Rotary . 3 2 .600 Kiwanis 1 4 .200 Elks 0 5 .000 shutout against the Milne Truck, era. , The win pushed the Miners two full games ahead of the pack and moved Milne from second sec-ond place in the standings Into a three-way tie with Lions and Rotary sharing honors. Robert Barrlck of Milne, but for the first inning of play, turned in a shutout performance. Two successive walks in the first inning, in-ning, followed by one of three hits for Columbia Milne also collected three hits forced in the only run of the game. It was the second setback of the week for Milnes. On Thursday, Thurs-day, June 4, Lions shellacked the Truckers with a 22 to 4 win with Johnny Black getting credit for the win for Lions. Barrick was charged with the loss. Two home runs were tallied in the game with Mike Carr of Lions and Merrill Mer-rill Dalley of Milne each paste-Ing paste-Ing one over the fence. Lions didn't etop with that 22 run tally, however. Monday evening even-ing they continued their winning ways, picking up their third straight win by downing Elks 24 to 12 in a marathon contest Carr again homered for Lions as did team mates Robert Corry and Mike Majors. Curtis Anderson was the wining pitcher. Loser for Elks was David Myers, and Bruce Holmes homered, but it was not enough to stop the rampaging ram-paging Tamers. Columbia picked up another win during the week at the expense ex-pense of the Elks Rulers. Satur-j day evening Kim Leigh pitched his team to a win allowing only one run to the Elks team, while his teammates were picking up five tallies off Brent Averett, who was charged with the loss. Lions' third win of the wccl: was a victory over Kiwanis Rubs. In this contest the Tamers scored 15 runs and gave up only 1 run to Kiwanis. Winning pitcher was Anderson and David Hair of Kiwanis Ki-wanis was charged with the loss. In this contest Carr again homered homer-ed and Majors added his second of the week. Wednesday night Rotary wal-lopped wal-lopped Kiwanis 18 to 2, due mostly most-ly to a wild first inning in which the Rangers scored 14 runs off the pitching of Bryan Bulloch and Glade McArthur. McArthur finished out the game on the mound and held Rotary to four runs In the final five innings. Dough Knight was on the mound for Rotary and held the Kubs to three hits, one a home run by John Rollo. Knight helped his cause with a home run and Martin Mar-tin Skougard added one. |
