Show City Police Dept. j To Clamp Down On Jaywalkers I Written into the law book of i Cedar City is a statute that indicates in-dicates that it is illegal to cross I Main Street except where there 1 has been provided regular pedes-itrian pedes-itrian lanes: , This is a law that has been uninforced over the past many, many years and one that residents, resi-dents, including law enforcement oficers, have violated practically every day. It is a law, however, that con-, corns the Cedar City Police Department De-partment and one that they feel must be enforced. Jaywalking, as it is commonly called, was not so serious in days gone by, but every day it be-j comes more important to resi- J dents of the area particularly when they are on Main Street I where increased local traffic and I increased out-of-sKce traffic has made the practice more of a ha- I zard. Motorists from the more highly populated areas are coming through Cedar City in increasing numbers and they have driven where the peiestin rules are rigidly inforced. It becomes perplexing per-plexing to these people to find residents in this area crossing the main thoroughfare from any i angle and any point along the street. It is pointed out that in the area between Center Street and 200 North Street a total of four pedestrian lanes are provided for those on foot to cross from one side of the street to another. It is a situation that we have grown up with in this area, law enforcement officers point out, but one that needs desperately at this time to be corrected. The Cedar City Poli?e Depart- -ment has solicited the support of citizens in correcting this situation situa-tion and eliminate jaywalking on Cedar City Main Street. Various means are being utilized util-ized to ask citizens to cooperate and to inform them of their responsibilities re-sponsibilities both as pedestrians and as motorists. Once ample warning has been given, however, the department intends to clamp down and after a reasonable time violation tickets tick-ets will be issued. |
