Show Rash of Brush Fires Hit Newcastle Area A series of grass and brush 1 ffres near Newcastle Thursday and Friday kept the men of that area busy. The first fire began Thursday evening along the U-56 Highway right-of-way opposite the home occupied by Jim Hansen, Han-sen, foreman of the Bar-V Ranch. It is -believed that the fire was started maliciously by a group of boys; however, nothing definite is known at this time. The fire spread rapidly into a brushy field adjoining the road. Although Al-though damage from this blaze was confined chiefly to fence posts which were burned, parents par-ents are urged to remind their children that in this season of hot, dry gusty winds, and dry grass and brush, a thoughtlessly started fire could destroy an entire en-tire community. The Cedar City fire department came out to Newcastle later In the evening to make certain that this blaze and the smaller one which was set at the same time farther west along the highway, were both safely out. The second fire occurred Friday Fri-day when some boys were burning burn-ing a patch of June grass not far from Melvin Hulet's garage. The fire got out of control and threatened the garage; however, quick action by the men of the neighborhood in cutting a trench through the grass brought the fire under control before any serious ser-ious damage was done. The third fire occurred the same afternoon at the Leo Knell farm, burning a pile of railroad ties and some other material. It is not known at this time just what caused this fire. These fires point up the need for prompt action in getting the local fire engine into usable condition, before be-fore any more serious fires occur. |
