Show 4-H Trio Demonstrate Superior Skills Awards Climax Year Of Project Work, Community Activities Lynda Thomsen of Spanish Fork, and Marsha Ann Wood of Holden, both 18, traveled to Chicago Chi-cago to attend the five-day 40th National 4 H Club Congress. Edwin Oiika, IS, of Heber City, was presented with a 19-jewel 19-jewel wrist watch. The trio was announced as state award winners in 4-H health, recreation and beautifl- I V- Lynda Tkomxn a Manna Wood cation of home grounds projects, proj-ects, respectively, by the Cooperative Co-operative Extension Service. Choosing the "health" leaf cf the 4-H clover as her chief objective, ob-jective, Miss Thomsen, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E. Ray Thomsen, Thom-sen, developed desirable health practices and attitudes. She became concerned about the community water supply and tested 85 wells. Owners of wells needing improvement cooperated co-operated with her efforts. She also participated in several health fund drives. She found that good health was interwoven with her safety, cqmmunlty service and foods projects. Eli Lilly and Company was ber host at the congress, as it has been to many 4-H'ers the last six years. Miss Wood, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh A. Wood, is a freshman at Utah State University. Univer-sity. Her county agent refers to her as "Miss Personality Plus." Miss Wood served as chair man for Millard county 4-H parties par-ties and led crafts classes at junior camp. She taught dances to a group participating in an all-church festival with 7,000 young people. In 4-H Club work eight years, she was pleased to note that her fifth year foods project "Come to Our Party," and ber recreation recre-ation program went hand in hand. Her expense-paid trip to Chicago was provided by John Deere. A five month paying job resulted re-sulted for young Osika from his project work. Noticing the improvement im-provement in the company-owned company-owned home and property of Mr. and Mrs. E. LaMar Osika, his father's employers em-ployers hired him to keep EdwinO.il. their lawns and flowerbeds as noat as his own. He enlarged and built three flagstone patios, including a fireplace in one. This 4-H youth won the tricolor tri-color award for highest achievement achieve-ment at the Wasatch county fair flower show and consistently acquired blue ribbons on his record book. His watch was a gift from Mrs. Charles R. Walgreen of Chicago, who has encouraged future landscape artists for 24 years. |
