Show Pony Jill-Stars Downed In Competition Cedar City Pony League all-stars, all-stars, representatives of the Utah, Idaho and Wyoming District No. 7, participated last week In the Western Regional finals at Wat-sonville, Wat-sonville, Calif. The local all-star aggregation was knocked out of the strong tournament in two successive games, losing to Covlna, Calif, in the opening game 7 to 0 and to Santa Monica, Calif.. In the second sec-ond round of play by a score of 5 to 2. Denny Marquardt of'Covjna pitched a perfect game against the Cedar City crew in the opening open-ing game of the region tournament tourna-ment last Friday morning at 10. Marquardt proved himself to be one of the outstanding pitchers of the tournament in his performance per-formance against Cedar City. No Cedar man reached first base. Fifteen of the local all-stars all-stars out of a total of 21 outs went down via the strikeout route on an assortment of pitches pitch-es that kept everyone guessing. Cedar City let In three runs in each of the first two innings to give Covlna a 6 to 0 lead. Lory Misel, on the mound for Cedar, found difficulty in his control In the coastal city and the first two innings of play were played In a light fog. In addition to posting three of their five hits in the first inning of play, three costly errors assisted Covina in pushing over their six runs. Cedar City settled down to top notch defensive play by the third inning and completed a total of three double plays In the seven inning contest, a fete that was not matched in the tournament. In the first Inning of play after three runs had been scored Cedar Ce-dar snuffed out any further threat with a fine double play from Leigh Rosenberg on shoit to Steve Cahoon on first to end the Inning. Cedar City, behind the pitching of Calvin Hair, kept Santa Monica Moni-ca scoreless In the first two frames, and in the third, following follow-ing two successive walks by Hair, Larry Anderson was called in to relieve. Two runs were pushed in bv Santa Montrn In h third frame on two hits and two errors to tie the game up. Cedar City failed to score for the remainder of the game and Santa Monica put the victory on Ice In the sixth frame with three runs on two hits and three errors. Rosenberg came to the mound in that Inning for Cedar City and finished out the game. Anderson was charged with the loss. Santa Monica was eliminated from further participation In the Sunday afternoon game by San Bernardino, Calif. Participating In the tournament tourna-ment were six clubs from California, Cali-fornia, one from the state of Washington, and Cedar City. The eight clubs represented 10 western west-ern states.
