Show Lions, Kiwanians Rapped Hard But Retain Lead SECOND HALF FINAL STANDINGS Lions 7 3 .700 Klwanls 6 4 .600 Rotary 5 5 .500 Elks 5 5 .500 ; Milne 4 6 .400, Columbia 3 7 .300 In the final week of action in the second half of play in Little, League baseball, fate took a sudden sud-den turn for the underdogs, but not sufficient to upset the final standings. Lions and Kiwanis, who have bee battll.ig for first place in the second half since the outset still finished in first and second. However, In their final appearances appear-ances each of these teams was beaten with the victors scoring a shut-out against them. Monday evening Milne downs lions 9 to 0 and Tuesday in the final league game Kiwanis was defeated by Columbia by a score of 17 to 0. Final Contests Milne and Lions, each winner of a half in the league schedule, will now battle it out for the 1957 championship in a best two out of three contests. Games will be played Monday, Tuesday, and if necessary Wednesday eve-nings, eve-nings, Aug. 26, 27 and 28. This playoff will wrap up the season and declare a championship. The Lion Tamers are the defending league champions. The Elks Rulers made the most substantial gain in the standing stand-ing during the week, moving from fourth to a tie for third in the final standings . In throe games played on successive evenings, eve-nings, Thursday. Friday and Saturday, Sat-urday, the Rulers scored two victories vic-tories against a strgle defeat. Elks Victorious Thursday the Elks :lub battled behind the strong pitching of Don A. Matheson to defeat Kiwanis Ki-wanis by a score of 5 to 3. He also proved himself at bat with a home run and a double to ac count for two runs in the game. Elks had one big inning pushing in four of their five tallies In the third on two hits, two walks, one hit batter and a single error. Kiwanis Ki-wanis called on three pitchers during the evening, including David Grimshaw, Paul Felt and Bob Cuff. Friday the Elks dropped a close one to Rotary which evened up the standings for these two clubs. Score was 8 to 6. Steven Judd was Instrumental In the win for his team, collecting three hits in as many trips, and including in-cluding a double. He was also credited with three runs batted in. Both clubs collected seven hits. Columbia Downed In Saturday's contest the Elk Rulers won out over Columbia by a score of 14 to 13. Danny Jones was on the mound for the Elks and was credited with the win. Losing pitcher was Lee Hunter of Columbia. Monday and Tuesday were fa- tal evenings for Lions and Kiwanis. Ki-wanis. Milne, first half champions showed thrtr stuff In the first contest collecting a total of eight hits off Bruce Stucki of the Lions and Kent Leigh, the winning pitcher for Milne, allowed only three hits to the scond half leaders. Milne pushed over runs In every inning with the exception excep-tion of the sixth and allowed only four of the Lion Tamers to get on base. No base runner, however, advanced beyond fir'. has in a fine defensive display by the Milne squad. Tuesday evening Klwanls was knocked out of the second half race In the final league game, by Columbia, 17 to 0. Raymond Orion Or-ion was called on to pitch for Kiwanis when a number of 12 year olds of the squad failed to appear for the game. Orton had difficulty with his control In his losing effort. He was relieved by David Grimshaw. On the mound for Columbia was Fred Esplln who allowed only two hits to the Kiwanians In the four Innings of play. Game was called at the end of the fourth because of darkness. |
