Show Basketball Team Honored at Community Fete Over 123 persons gathered at the dining room of the home economics department of the high school here Monday night to honor the members of this year's basketball squad for their fine play during the past season. The banquet was sponsored by' the Parowan Chamber of Commerce Com-merce in cooperation with the high school. Dr. Lionel VV. Sorenson, president presi-dent ot the Chamber of Commerce, Com-merce, presided over the affair with Watson Adams of the entertainment enter-tainment committee acting as master of ceremonies. Guests of honor were Coach and Mrs. William Wil-liam "Twist" Jones, members of the team, their partners and parents. Brief speakers on the program were Supt. Ianthus Wright of the Iron County schools; Claude Adams and Mario Topham, members mem-bers of the first Parowan high team ever to go to a state tournament, tour-nament, in 1922; Ivan Decker who coached the 1923 Parowan high team, which tok 4th place in the state tournament! S. M. Clark, member of the 1932 team, the last one to represent the Parowan school in the state meet until this year's aggregation; Coach William L. "Twist" Jones, and Principal Walter K. Daly. During his talk Coach Jones, represented the Deseret News-Telegram News-Telegram in presenting to John V. Benson, the medal given him by those newspapers f,vr his being be-ing selected as a member of the 1953 all-state first team. He also stated that in some games during dur-ing the past season that he had been outcoached, but that hi' team had never been out-fought. S. M. Clark, chief of the Parowan Paro-wan Volunteer Fire department, in behalf of his organisation, presented Oach Jones and the following squad members with leather belts during the program: Lyman Munford, team manager; Melvin Mitchell, John Benson, Tommy Dobrusky, Milton Mortensen, Mor-tensen, Melvin Hyatt, David Orton, Or-ton, Gale Stolk, Eric Clark, Don- aid Stubbs, Roy Benson and Donald Don-ald Gurr. Each belt had a silver buckle on which the team member's first name was engraved in the school colors, blue and gold, with & raised basketball in one corner and a ram's head in the other. Musical numbers on the program pro-gram were a saxophone slo by ! Marie Adams, and two numbers ;by the High school girls' chorus under the direction of Wilford W. Young.
