Show Sports Fans See Preview of Softball Tourney Local snorts fans enjoyed a sort of a preview of the Southern Utah Softball tournament Tuesday Tues-day evening, when the Columbia Iron Mines team, and a team from St. George tangled on the Cedar City diamond. St. George dominated the play most of the way and walked off with a victory vic-tory by a score of 8 to 3. Leon Watson, outstanding St. George athlete, was on the mound for the visiting team, and had the Cedar City batters completely com-pletely baffled. In addition he poled a home run with two team mates on base for the first three runs of the game. The Iron Mines team failed to get a man on base until the fourth Inning, when Keith Cripps drew a walk, starting a rally that gave his team two runs. He was forced at second on a ground ball by Kent Dover, after which Lamar La-mar Snyder connected for his team's first hit, and Leo Cahoon lined a drive to center field which Ronald MacArthur muffed allowing Dover and Snyder to score. The local team added a run later in the game when Bob Stratton got a single and Snyder Sny-der followed with a double to score Stratton. York Nelson was on the mound for the mines team and although he allowed more hits than Wat- son, he did a fine job, but received re-ceived spotty support. |
