Show i ED WM MAY. GARHERP1VOT JOBFQRDSAC ' An ambitious Utah Aggie basketball bas-ketball team was back to work in the Smart gym Monday afternoon after a surprising victory over a Denver Athletio Club last Saturday Satur-day night. As Coach Dick Romney pointed Out, the game cannot be used as a criterion of the seasonal games to come. Aggies were very "hot" in their basket shootingj a point which shoved them into an early lead after long shots by Petty, Douglas and Ryan, and kept them In front of the Denver quint thru-out the game. In addition, the former collegians were weary from two strenuous games the two 1 proceeding nights and probably . were not at their best. However, the game did show lx that Aggies have good prospects Ir for a strong club this year. They crj will be much stronger than last tlj year and if Coach Romney can w pull a good center out of his silk hat. Aggies will be a real oi contender for division honors, ai It is unlikely that Ryan will go ti back to center despite the seemly seem-ly ing need for him at that posi-aq-tion. Eedford "Slim" Douglas is ia bound to develop fast and Willard ;d Skousen also plays the position to efficiently. If any shifting is done Ir it will likely be the shift of Ed vt Wade from guard to the pivot 'u job. It is the developing of a capable ! center which will occupy much of n Romney's time during the rest of . the pre-season games. In Captain . Pettv ard Ryan, Romney has two truly great forwards. Ryan was e an all-division choice last year e and Petty was even ht el and Petty was even better againsi ri Denver, Shelby West is a vers j proficient substitute and Harolc j Hanson is little behind. On the N guard line, the work of Eldon Wat-fa Wat-fa son was excellent and this lanky boy practically earned a regular j job thru his performance. Ed M Wade, however, was the defensive star of either team, and in the big redhead. Aggies already have one of the best defenders in the country. Should he be shifted to center, he will fall back to the guard line following the tip-off, while an offensive player, probab-t probab-t ly Shelby West, will come up from e the guard post in the exchange. 11 Frank McNiel, regular guard last M year, will make the going very j tough for the regular five and may be removed t0 the starting quint ' any time. i |
