Show I CIVIC SPIRIT TAKES HOLD OF CITIZENS OF RICHMOND r DURING YEAR NOW CLOSING By MISS HELENE HARRIS Ty ICHMOND During the past 5 year the mayor and city coun-gjtcil coun-gjtcil and the Civic and Literary J clubs of Richmond have cooperated cooperat-ed in many ways to improve con-gg con-gg ditions here. In In order that this j p our home town might be a better place in which to live that we ' g might have fuller and better life Hand added advantages with a fin-f fin-f Her community spirit which we get Honly through working together. - Early In the year 1934, under the I direction of the city and with f funds furnished by the CWA, the Jnold school building located on. the " northwest corner of the city hall i.fpark was torn down and removed. "0This building was unsafe and not r In use and its removal furnished . and a fall, as well as a spring ; cleaning up, was made there, so that never in the history of our ' cemetery has it been cared for as well and presented a better appearance than now. During the late summer, under the direction of the city council, ' and with labor furnished by the FERA and material furnished by the city, a fine kitchen has been, built adjoining our club rooms in the basement of the library building build-ing and this kitchen is now being equipped with modern conveniences that will make this building a real community center. The Lion's club, the Womans Literary club and the Junior Literary club have raised the money to furnish this kitchen. I Icemployment for a number of men i ,(Jor many weeks. .J A very fine clean-up movement was started early in the season by i fche city and the Flower Garden .', And Civic Improvement clubs and 'tommittees were started working ' iJm projects for the beautif ication 'at our community. The very splended manner in , (vhlch our annual Black and . i White Day show was put over .''pas evidence of the fact that we 5 save some good leaders and good: 1 irorkers, who aim to keep alive f T'ear after year a community event atjhat means much educationally as i Jrell as socially to our city and 7fur neighboring cities and states. J An added interest in flowers and ji nore beautiful grounds surround-d'ng surround-d'ng our public buildings and our ! Tpomes, has come as a result of :'lih work of the Flower Garden iind Civic Improvement clubs, through the lectures pertaining to : ijlvlc Improvement work and also cj a number of flower shows that i bave been put over. , J Our facilities for recreation, in !,ur own High Creek canyon have 4)een much improved by the for-1 The Lions club sponsored the movement for the canyon camp and for the improvement recently made on the state highway that goes through our city, in taking out some dangerous curves and widening some bridges and eliminating elimin-ating some dangerous crossings. The Lions club has also sponsored spon-sored entertainments to raise funds to buy some new books for the public library. The Womans Literary club has ; taken over a special project for having a plot of ground east of est service which has built better roads, made a clearing for a fine camp ground and installed equipment equip-ment which adds greatly to the convenience and pleasure of those seeking, the enjoyment that nature na-ture affords in our canyon. Our city cemetery has been improved. im-proved. A fine lot of hard wood trees were planted and kept alive the banks cleared and put in shape for a Literary crab flower garden. The city, with the help of the FERA made this clearing, and also one at the rear of the public library li-brary building which will be used for making an out-door living room by the Flower Garden and Civic clubs. The city is at the present time replacing in the city water system five blocks of old wood pipe on 3rd East street with new cast iron pipe, also one block of small pipe on State street is being replaced with larger pipe. A fine skating pond is now in the making at the southwest corner cor-ner of the city ball park and this is adding much to the pleasure of winter recreation of our young people. Mayor George O. Webb wishes to express appreciation for the funds that have come to our city this last year from the CWA and FERA, that have made possible the employment of many of our citizens and also made possible many of the improvements that have been made. |
