A very substantial sub-stantial gift of twenty-seven volumes vol-umes of art books was received from Miss Mary Teasdale of Los Angeles, Cal.. Many new shrubs have been planted on the public square grounds which are so well kept that they are one of the beauty spots of our city. Our city is teeming with the spirit of Christmas, enlivened by the artistic decorations all along Main street, on the archway to the city park, the community tree and the tobernacle. The people as a rule are enjoying good health and wish the staff and all the readers of the Cache American a merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. a. v By MRS. During the past year the city administration has made some most needed improvements in the Mack Memorial Park having installed in-stalled a new lighting system, built several well equipped rest rooms, graveled the roadways, planted lawns and a variety of beautiful ornamental trees, the marking of roadways with white rock, the installation of a water system and the building of a mound on which the name "James Mack Memorial Park" will be inscribed in-scribed in large letters at the entrance. en-trance. These improvements have been made possible through the FERA. The entrance to our beautiful' cemeetry has been improved by the ! planting of shrubs and lawn and : a rose garden which was spon- sored by our Smithfield Flower Garden Club under the supervision super-vision of William Read. The Utah Packing . corporation has had a very successful year. There were 480 men and 230 women employed during the canning can-ning season. 218,800 cases of peas were canned. This factory at the present time is the largest factory fac-tory of its kind in the world. Another sturdy financial business busi-ness is the Brick and Tile company com-pany which provides labor for many men. The Commercial National Bank reports through Thomas B. Farr, ! its cashier, that it has had a very ! busy and successful year. The bank has made substantial growth and while conducted in a conservative, con-servative, safe manner, it has been in a position to handle all classes of banking business whether great or small. Through the efforts of our Ki-wanis Ki-wanis club, twenty junior traffic traf-fic officers were sworn in at a special assembly at the Junior high school. Smthfield is well taken care of in the matter of schools. We have a junior high school with 289 pupils in, attendance and the Summit Sum-mit grade school with an attendance at-tendance of 500. Represented here are enterprises among which may be named nearly all trades, professions and named: merchantile stores, hardware hard-ware stores, lumber yards, confectionary, con-fectionary, drug stores, implement houses, grocery stores, millineries butcher shops, electric light office, telephone office,- hotel, restaurants, shoe and harness shops, blacksmith black-smith shops real estate office, a printing and publishing establishment, establish-ment, barber shops, two dentists, two doctors, picture show house, dance halls, three beauty parlors, a bakery, two thriving flour mills and a grain and feed store. The Smithfield ice and cold storage company located on First West reports a very successful year. It employs three men during the summer and delivers ice to patrons here and in the surrounding surround-ing towns as well. We are certainly proud of having hav-ing one of the best water systems and the purest water In the state of Utah.
