Show FIRE DEPARTMENT ONE OF MOST IMPORTANT ASSETS OF CITY AND -COUNTY I Logan City-Cache county fire ! department is pointed to as a ! model department, said to be one I of the best in the United States. jThe working conditions of the fire department and the ambulance in ! the same department, indicates the people here are united. By I such an arrangement the most ! good to the most people can be j accomplished at a minimum cost. I Chief Rapp has In mind the addition of a ladder truck to the department. This will give protec-I protec-I tion to people in buildings with more than one story. Had ladders been available, there would have been no need of the recent life toll at the big fire in Michigan. All could have been brought to safety. A fire alarm system throughout the city is also contemplated. con-templated. With such a system and with a ladder truck added to the department there could be another reduction of 10 per cent in fire insurance premiums. Citizens generally and property owners especially, are jealous of the Logan city and Cache county fire department. It is ably manned with Chief C. W. Rapp, a specialist special-ist in the art of fighting fire and a corps of ably trained assistants. A review of the records of the department since 1917 when Chief Rapp took over the department up to the close of 1933 shows fire loses amounted to a grand total of $194,047.04. This is an average of approximately $11,414.53 per year or a per capita loss of $1.14. The yearly average In the United States over the same prior per capita has been placed at $4.55. The installation of an ambulance in connection, with the fire department de-partment is recognized as a model working arrangement. Other cities of the state have attempted this arrangement but todate none have worked it out successfully as has Logan and Cache county. The ambulance was purchased in February, 1930, at a cost of $2,458. A special committee composed com-posed of Chief Rapp, Dr. F. B. Parkinson and A. A. Firrr.age, ap- j pointed by the chamber of commerce com-merce in 1929, raised the funds by popular subscription. The placing of an ambulance in the fire department de-partment in Logan City, is said to be the first arrangement ot this kind in the United States. ' The cost to patrons for use of' the ambulance has been placed at! $2.50 per call in Logan city and for calls in the county the same fee is assessed with an additional cost of 12 M cents per mile. This fee is just half that charged in Salt Lake and Ogden. Over the period the ambulance has been In use, there have been 470 calls for its use. Thirty per-! cent of the calls have been charity char-ity cases. |
