Show HYRUM STEPS AHEAD IN MANY WAYS DURING YEAR COMING TO CLOSE By HOMER PAUL ANDERSEN DURING the year 1934 Hyrum has dene much to look back on as outstanding and much to build on for the before it was realized. The Lions I dub sponsored the ground breaking break-ing celebration for the building i of the reclamation project which brought more people to Hyrum than any other event of the year. The Civic Improvement club and the city officers have done wonderful won-derful work with celebrations. Particularly the Fourth of July celebration, the outstanding one in the county. One of the most recent projects successfully put over by the Lions lK wme w Hitr f-nmmiinitv Fes- r v future. ' some oi the accomplishments accomplish-ments which Hy- j rum has put over; in this year will remain as Important Im-portant in the i history of that town as did its. first settling in 1860. Without a tival held for three nights in the Elite HalL It was an important piece of work, with admissions being be-ing in goods which were turned over to the needy. Now, as an important step in gaining social happiness for the people, the city has purchased the Elite. Hall, a valuable asset for athletic, meeting, meet-ing, and social purposes. .The city council may well be proud of this move as it is appreciated by all Hyrum as the logical ownership. Though handicapped through lack of water, Hyrum farmers through efficient use of land, grew practically enough feed for their livestock. Except for the white fly, sugar beet yields were not affected, except in a few cases, by water shortage. Surprising was the high grade of peas which farmers realized from their acreages acre-ages in a drouth year. Were it not for the excellent practices used by the farmers of this community com-munity in their agricultural pursuits, pur-suits, and of their splendid markets mar-kets as compared to other re-, giens, the farmers of this locality lo-cality would be far worse off than, t.hev are. as a natural condition . , doubt ' its out I H. P. Andersen amM bution towards progress has been in the building of the Hyrum dam. Not only has the dam been important im-portant for Hyrum as a labor producer pro-ducer and a business reviver; it will always be an important part of the economic and social life of the people in the south end of the valley. The building of the dam has filled homes in Hyrum to capacity, capa-city, with workers, engineers and surveyors. Rents have been at a premium while retail store owners own-ers and service station operators say they have not had a better business year. In anticipation of the state higjhway being built over the dam, a brighter outlook for landowners along the proposed pro-posed route, has come about. It is safe to say that the building of the Hyrum dam has been the greatest single feature of lifting the depression that has occured in the community. Public works always will be an important source of progress in a community. Outstanding among the improvements made in Hyrum are: The digging and laying of drains through two important un-drained un-drained areas in the town, the water being diverted to irrigation use. A new heavier pole and copper cop-per wire power line, distributing the electric load more evenly from the Municipal plant over the town and making Hyrum the best lighted towns, per capita, in the valley. A more recent addition is the 3c camp in the mouth of Blacksmith Fork canyon. The city furnished the camp site which is excellent from standpoints of drainage, water supply, convenience conven-ience of location and many fac- - mu, .nmr oitj hiul alreadv from drouth and depression. It would require thousands of words to list all of the private and public improvements piat have gone on during the past year. They would range from canal improvements im-provements and well digging to decorations for the holidays; and from the concreting of private basements to the remodeling of ! upstairs apartments; from successful suc-cessful conferences and religous services to prize fights. All in all, Hyrum has done ' much to be proud of. No business organizations have failed nor have farmers been foreclosed. Hyrum can face the future year ready for any kind of a blow, for the ac- j complishments made by the com- 'munity have not all been, tem- pprary. . been improved and was an ideal, canyon park before the 3c camp was constructed. It is anticipated that they will improve it still further. At the present time the work of uncovering and rebanding the city water supply p'pe line 2 over the east bench has been rapidly going on. The civic organizations of Hyrum Hy-rum have done much to make the year worth while for the citizens of Hyrum. Outstading is the Lions club which fought hard for thp irri iration nroiect for months |
