Show More Than Billion Spent On Oil Here More than a billion dollars has been spent in the Rocky Mountain region in the search for oil during the last seven years From a modest start of about $30 mill-lio- n in 1949, the expenditure rate has climbed steadily until today the oil industry has become one of the most important factors in OIL SHALE COUNTRY near Rifle, Colo., In the Colorado canon country. High on the ledges in the background private concerns and U. S. government crews have extracted shale for processing in the huge retort at Rifle. Difficulty in reaching the shale deposits is easily understood when the terrain is studied. As another step in its diversification program, Climax Molybdenum Company has acquired oil leases in northeastern Oklahoma valued at more than $5,000,000, Arthur H. Bunker, president, announced. Climax has purchased all the leases formerly held by the White-hil- l Oil Corporation of Tulsa, and most of the leases formerly held by the Whitehill family and associates from William J. Sherry of Tulsa, who acquired them from the original owners. The leases cover about 13,500 acres primarily in the Nowata Field. Production by waterflooding is at the approximate rate of 1,500 barrels a day from 1,500 wells. The Whitehill Oil Corp. has been liquidated and Climax will operd ate the properties as the Waterflood Division of its o 1 department, headed by Gay V. Land in New York. L. L. Brundred will be division manager in direct charge of these properties. He will bo located in the former White-hil- l office in Tulsa. Climax is the free worlds largest producer of molybdenum, a strategic metal used chiefly as an alloy for hardening and toughening steel and cast iron. In the past five years the company has diversified, so that it is now mining and milling uranium, vanadium and tungsten, as well as producing oil. This acquisition will more than double the Climax oil production and represents the third major investment in waterflood properties made by the company. War boom days brought every sort of speculator and character to the district. If they parked their truck, pitched a tent, or built a house ten miles up the basin or in town it didnt make much difference because the town didnt have much to offer. It was almost as big a problem to drill for water as it was for od. The thirty inhabitants of the sleepy ranch community hadnt given much serious thought to expensive water and sewage systems in pre-oi- l days. Drilling proved costly In the hard-rocformation and tight even though the field was soon shipping over 60,000 barrels a day movmany of the ed out. It was taking big money to reach 6,000 feet and over into the Weber sandstone and the most prolific oil pockets on the Colorado Plateau. At times the population swelled to 3,000 and over. Today it is 1,200 with that many more in surrounding camps. The boom settled to a roar. Pioneers, who first called attention to the fabulous field, are now using the same competitive spirit to build a community. They recently completed a $230,000 addition to a water system which can service triple the present population. A sewage system capable of handling more than a population of 5,000 was completed in 1953. Another cooperative project is the $125,000 hospital. And, too, there are now eight active churches m the immediate area. But almost every visitor is Impressed by the sprawling ultramodern schools. A new addition has been added every year since 1950, and right now $950,000 worth of construction is going into expanding high school facilities. Rangely citizens have found oil and progress go hand in hand. In the last ten years the areas cumulative production has been 125,422,-70- 1 barrels of oil. Rangely is growing. It will continue to grow so long as the nation needs its oil. the regions economy. Furthermore, the Rocky Mountain obregion has climbed from an nascure oil area into one of the tions most important. The regions states have felt the impact of oil economy during the last two years as never before. New records have been set for total leased lands, exploration, drilling, producing, refining and marketing. And, what is more important, the new od economy is here to stay. The billion-dolla- r figure covers only the acquisition and leasing of land, exploration and drilling costs. Add to this the cost of refining and marketing finished products and the total regional outlay would soar to astronomical figures. The region extending from th Canadian border to Northern Nevr Mexico and from Nevada to is producing Western Nebraska oil at an ever increasing rate. This is being done in face of a national crude oil surplus and in creasing imports. That the region has been able to continue its rate of growth is proof of an aggresive and fore sighted policy by the industry. The new oil idlars are not confined to scattered areas in the region. Leases now cover substan tially more than 200 million acres in all of the 11 states, Colorado, Montana, North and Wyoming, South Dakota, Idaho, Utah, Western New Mexico, Northern Arizona and Nevada.
