Those three men were Bill Hopkins, Philip W. Pratt and Smith Steele. Soon others followed, and on July 4 Charles E. Bennett and a group crossed the pass, dropping down on the other side to find a new gold camp which had been named Independence, commemorating the day on which it was founded. Bennetts party halted momentarily to eat and refresh themselves, then pushed on into the valley that lay beyond. Arriving at a spring at the foot of what is known now as Aspen Mountain, Bennetts party discovered others had been there recently and pitched camp. The Hopkins party had arrived earlier and were now out in the mountains surrounding the valley prospecting for precious ores. A short time later both the Hopkins and Bennett prospecting parties found traces of ore on Aspen BEALE APPLIANCE STORE 216 Railroad Ave. Phone 108 Rifle Colorado Bob's Texaco Station Tires - Batteries Complete Lubrication 114 West 3rd Rifle Colorado staking out claims. Thus the town now named Aspen was settled first by two mining parties. They erected a dozen log cabins around the spring and both Bennett and Hopkins staked out two ranch claims in the valley between the two mountains. Since they were on Ute land, they called the settlement Ute City. Somehow the word got back to Leadville that riches were to be found on the other side of the divide and within a few days other prospectors drifted in. An occasional party of white hunters turned up during the summer, but no Indians. Some of the whites remained on in Ute City and turned miners; others drifted farther on, carrying news of the exciting ore finds. The town wras calm and placid, some of the men working hard each day driving shafts into the mountains, others doing assessment work. Then on Oct. 4, 1879, the calm was suddenly broken when a man on horseback came rushing up the Roaring Fork River from the direction of present-da- y Glenwood Springs. He was a courier sent out by Gov. Pitkin to warn away all prospectors who had penetrated on to the Western Slope because of a danger of a general uprising and wholesale slaughter. The courier told of terrifying events which had occurred only a few days earlier. The courier related that on Sept. 29 Indians had killed Nathan Meeker, head of the White River Indian Agency and Eleven overbearing of his associates also were killed and three women of the agency were captured. Another band of Utes ambushed and killed several troops and their leader. Major Thornburgh, marching from Wyoming to save Meeker. The result was panic in Ute city. Prospectors formed a council and hunters were called in. The men knew they were illegally in Ute territory and the majority voted to race back to Leadville and the safety of the white mens domain. Pratt and Steele dissented, deciding not to abandon their claims and as a precaution against Indians on the warpath they left their Ute City cabin to camp out in the high timber. They volunteered to guard the claims of the others until the Indians could be quieted. Some thirty others set out on the three-da- y trip to Leadville. At Leadville the news soon spread wide and far of the riches to be found in the Indian country west of the divide. Eventually peace came once again to the country on the other side of the continental divide. The prospectors once more hit the trail, and returned to Ute City. Phillips Joins In Atomic Studies K. S. Adams chairman, and Paul Endacott, president, Phillips Petroleum jCompany, have confirmed the announcement by the Atomic Energy Commission that Phillips is a member of the Rocky Mountain Nuclear Power Study Group, recently authorized by the Commission. Consisting of nine companies, the group has been formed to investigate the technical and economic feasibility of a multiple purpose nuclear reactor for the production of electrical power, fissionable materials and radioisotopes. Continued developments from exploration of the atom may well have important applications to our petroleum and chemical activities as well as in other fields of energy, Adams and Endacott stated, pointing out that the company does not regard atomic energy as competitive with the petroleum industry but instead consider the two fields as being complementary. of the OOPS!
