That boom lasted for several years, until after high grade radium was found in the Belgian Congo. Todays uranium mining, say the experts, will last indefinitely and there is nothing to indicate they are wrong. All evidence points to a continuing and healthy growth of the industry. Between the early 1920s and 1947 there was not much exploration for the magic ores on the Plateau. But when the Manhattan District was brought into existence the first few tons of uranium concentrate was taken from tailings remaining after the vanadium content had been extracted from ores mined from the sandstones of the region. The word went out. The for the strange subbig hunt stance began. A new surge of activity was started on the Plateau. Hundreds of miners swept into the area in search of the magic ores so sorely needed by the U. S. government for use in manufacturing the atom bomb. Discoveries were made, almost daily. Then was set up by Congress the Atomic Energy Commission, and the statement of Senator McMahon, appearing in the Congressional Record, defines exploration and the governments policy regarding government participa- tion: Upon the sources of these materials may well rest the security So we of the nation decided it was better to encourage the independent prospector to find and discover (uranium) deposits and to see to it that when they were discovered the Commission would be the only buyer of them at a price fixed by the The senator further Commission. observed: It is not the intent of the Committee to authorize the Commission to engage in mining .... .... s HATS Liquor Store Phone 687 We Deliver Cortez Colo. The act was passed on August 1, 1946. The Atomic Energy Commission was created as of January, 1947; and the work of exploration for ore and the evaluation of the potential production of the Colorado Plateau began in the summer of that year. The schedule of prices established by the AEC includes bonus payments on the first 10,000 pounds ol ore ranging from $3.00 for .10 per cent content of U308 to $700.00 for 10.00 per cent ore of the or roscoehte types. A year later there still was practically no uranium mining in the Plateau area. Ore deposits were scattered and small and only two or three had been found which contained 100,000 tons or more. Today there are a dozen or more 100,000-to- n ore bodies, and the AEC reveals there are some car-noti- te million-to- n deposits. Ore produc- has been doubling every eighteen months and even greater expansion is just ahead. New mills are being built and old mills are all on a giganbeing expanded tic gamble. And what does the future hold for this wonderous new industry that has contributed so much to the economy of the United States? What will happen after the present government buying program officially ends in lb62? What is the plan for keeping the industry alive? Jesse C. Johnson, director of the division of raw materials, AEC, said before the American Mining Congress at San Francisco on Sept. 22 last year: To maintain continuing production from Colorado-typ- e deposits, there must be an assured government or commercial market . . . . The results of the domestic uranium program further confirm the view of the mining industry that the way to develop mineral production is to provide a market with adequate profit incentives and let private industry go to work The long-termarket depends upon the use of nuclear fuel power. . . . Mr. Johnson also said at that same meeting, . . Our domestic uranium ore buying schedule is guaranteed through March 31, 1962. This does not necessarily indicate an end date. This program has had earlier termination dates first in 1951, then extended to 1954, then to 1958, and now to 1962. While no definite commitment can be given, there will be further extensions of the guaranteed market under the defense program . . . . Mr. Johnson mentioned industrial power and private industry. Rowley of Spring Glen and Henry Telaroki of Helper, Utah. The sale price was not disclosed, but it is understood to be one of the largest mining claim sales made on the Colorado Plateau. The general location of the claims is one group on the west flank of the San Rafeal Swell, Emery county, Utah. One set of claims is in a section of Salt Wash, immediately north of Capital Reef National Monument in Wayne county. The said claims are in the Henry Mountain mining district. One group of 200 claims is located on Meeks Mesa, adjoining the well known Meeks property from which considerable high grade ore has been shipped. The Meeks claims which are in Wayne county, are about four miles from the Pick property which was purchased by Floyd Odium for over $9 million. If this goal is achieved, nuclear energy will become an important factor in the production of electricity and uranium will be the fuel for many future generating tobacco pouches, brief cases, wallets and raincoats that have a new plastic "zipper." Experts agree there should be reserves of nuclear fuel for at least one hundred years, basing the reserve needs on the investment of billions of dollars in new generating plants. A study made for the AEC assumes that nuclear power capacity in the United States may be 12 million kilowatts by 1970, 42 million by 1980, and 100 million by 1990. And it has been calculated that the inventory requirement for 1,000,000 kilowatts of electrical capacity is 600 tons of uranium. Replacement of used uranium to operate the 1,000,000 kilowatts of electrical capacity will require about 50 tons of uranium annualthe need for uranium will grow throughout it will not years some have feared. 4 $ ftp- I iJLJL t THE HOTEL SHIPROCK at Shiprock, N.
