Barren Canons of Utah Once Fertile Farm Lands WHITE CANON, Utah olate, waterless, barren country, a challenge to any man daring to enter to explore its Energy potentialities, was once a fertile area where Moki Indians farmed to feed their families. Until about 1100 A.D., according to recorded history, the White Canon country was populated by several tribes of Moki Indians. There was water then, but a severe drouth and an invasion by hostile Indians drove the peaceful Mokis to other fields and the land was left to bake in the hot Utah sun. Since that day it has provided but little toward the subsistence OIL COMPANY COMPANY PREFERENCE COMMON FOR SPECULATIVE FUNDS TREVOR CURRIE SECURITIES 435 U. But there is one mineral contained in this barren earth that man seeks and sometimes finds. Uranium. Many have tried to find it and some of them have been successful. Others have failed and have left the district, unable to withstand the rigors of competing with a Nature that forbids even a drop of water to a thirsting prospector. Since the . search for uranium was started there have been established about twelve producing mines in the White Canon and nearby Red Canon area. The little town of White Canon, Utah, lies at the mouth of the long canon at the Colorado River. It is a thriving community of about 120 residents who are earning their living through uranium mining and related businesses. An ore buying station was established last October by the AEC, operated by American Smelting and Refining Co., to handle ores produced in the district. Away from the river back in the canon country man must be constantly alert if he is to survive because there he can raise crops only under the most adverse conditions, he can obtain water only by digging the deepest of wells. At White Canon it is different. Rich silt has been deposited there for centuries by the mighty Colorado River, providing fertile soil for farm crops; thus many families residing here raise much of their own food. Water is still somewhat of a problem. Not very many years ago the people of the town decided on a community water project, and a deep W'ell was drilled to provide cool water from far beneath the earths crust. But it cant be wasted on irrigation, so water is taken from the Colorado for that le PENNANT DRILLING COMPANY, INC. EMPIRE PETROLEUM CHICAGO of man.
