Monticello, a southeastern Utah community which has grown from relative unimportance a few short years ago to a key center of the ranium empire that surrounds it. Although Monticello has suffered (he usual growing pains, it tried to keep stride with the changing times, attempting to provide adequate school facilities, housing and other necessities to take care of g e population. The man living next door today may pull out tomorrow, if he hears of a strike in another locality. But for the most part the economy of the town is fairly well Stabilized. For example, there are churches denominaseveral representing tions. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, better known as the Mormon Church, has by far the largest congregation of any in Monticello, but all are well attended and supported. Two new schools have recently been completed and new buildings and additions already are being planned. Provision has been made for future growth, the new high school being located on an especial, ly large plot of ground so the building could be expanded. One of the very important phases of life In Monticello is the popularity of hunting and fishing. Monticello is the base for such operations, easily accessible from here. Several choice spots are within a half hours driving time from the heart of Monticello. And, of course, completely surrounding Monticello are the many mines busy day after day producing the stuff from which is made the terrible the mineral which has been responsible for the towns growth. Job opportunities are numerous for skilled and semiskilled workmen. Men are coming into the district from far away to work as tradesmen. carpenters, miners, Families are not coming with most of the men because of the present lack of adequate housing facilities and because some of the jobs, such as carpentering, are of a more or less temporary nature. But the opportunities are everpresent, and many are taking full advantage of them. Those men will grow with the community, will, in years to come, be remembered as the Pioneers of the uranium age. Green River Aviation Co. For example, discovery of rich ore bodies, which have made millionaires of their finders, requires luck. A well planned, long term exploration program puts the man looking for uranium in a position to be lucky. On the basis of experience, and in the opinion of most uranium men, such a program should, at least, uncover a number of modest commercial deposits. For the large company, opinion is that these should be mined by the company with proceeds supporting continuing exploration. In fact, a good many veterans in the uranium business feel that a large investor would do well to buy an operating property, swap dollars for ore plus experience as it were, and start from there. For the individual, a good return can be made mining a small ore body If capital outlay is not prohibitive. Alternatively the ore body can be sold for funds with which to continue prospecting for a bonanza. Then there is the time element. Regardless of quantity or quality of experience elsew'here, the record shows that It takes about two years for engineers, prospectors and geologists to become effective in uranium exploration. With this in mind, the Individual prospector should see that his grub, stake is adequate for an extended stay. The large investor should not expect immediate results from personnel transferred from other field or should obtain services of a man who has had two years or more Plateau experience behind him. A suggestion for newcomers is to secure a textbook on sedimentology and a nodding acquaintance with uranium chemistry. A large amount of difficulty occurs when prospectors are unfamiliar with state and federal mining laws. So it is important that they acquaint themselves with such laws, and, equally important, that they find out what is the prevailing local custom regarding the mining laws. Too, uranium mines can be overmechanized. Although large tonnages of rock are handled cheaply, resulting dilution has taken the profit. So the prospector should make sure that he is thinking of mining in terms of pounds of uranium rather than in tons of ore. A number of small operations bed together by lease or buying agreement can be very successful, as witness USV and VCA. Several companies have also operated sue. cessfully by considering a number of scattered ore bodies as different stopes in one mine. Then theres the bonus to consider. If five small ore bodies each contain 10,000 pounds of U308 and otherwise fill the definition of new properties as contained in AEC requirements, they each qualify for a $35,000 new production bonus; a total of $175,000. If one property was large enough to contain the total 50,000 pounds of U308 total production bonus would be $35,000. The AEC is interested not tons in buying pounds of U308 of rock. Another thing to be remembered: There is generally more profit in mining than in milling. This is the consensus of opinion of men on the Plateau who are in a position to know. One condition enters Phone 4261 Each year the oil industry spends Green River Utah Hurst Fountain And Sundries Cosmetics Medicines A into the picture, however, and that is a reasonable price for the orebody. The best situation profit-wisis to both mine and mill the ore. In this way the 23 percent depletion allowance can be computed on the price per pound of uranium in the concentrate, rather than on the pound of uranium in the ore, which means more dollars for the miner. Not everyone can build a mill and the AEC, who has the say, per day unit is feels that a It could the practical minimum. be worth computing the slightly higher milling cost per unit in a smaller mill and comparing it with savings to be made through the depletion allowance if you undertake milling your own ore. Most pioneers in the uranium mining field will give you one last word of caution: If you seriously intend to explore for and mine uranium, you can get a lot of helpful information and save yourself time and money by talking with AEC officials first. e, 200-to- n Chicago group has acquired control of Black Mammoth Consott dated Mining Co. of Tonopah, Ne- wthrough the purchase of 1,450,00 shares of stock, it was revealed in an application seeking to list the newly issued shares on tha Los Angeles Stock Exchange.
