Pueblo Steel Plant Doubles Its Output A major Colorado industry, serving the entire states users of steel products, is the Colorado Fuel and Iron Corp., at Pueblo, which within the past decade has doubled its ingot capacity to become one of the most important steel producers in the country. According to a recent report issued by the company, the keynote of CF&Is program of expansion and modernization has been diversification accomplished by finding new uses for present products, developing new products lor the various industries the corporation serves, and by acquisition of companies that have added new products, new customers, and new markets. CF&I was started in 1872 at Pueblo and today has over 22,000 employes and operates 14 plants in strategic locations throughout the United States. Its early history shows that CF&I was first formed for the purpose of manufacturing iron steel and coke, and for the mining and selling of coal. It was the consolidation of three companies previously formed but which were limited in scope and in capitalization. First act of the new company was the erection of a blast furnace at Pueblo, which went into opera- ... tion on Sept. 13, 1881. One of the principal products of CF&I during its early years of operation was steel rails for the and today the nation's railroads Pueblo plant is considered to still be one of the major producers of rails. It is the only mill west of the Mississippi producing steel rails and fastenings. The mining and oil industries of the Colorado Plateau, as well as coal mines, manufacturing plants, laboratories and research and development enterprises will depend to a great extent upon the products of the CF&I mills at Pueblo for their future equipment, tools, and Sc Iron Corporation plant at Pueblo.
