Show Sillcy Sensations has new home in North Salt Lake By CHERIE HURER Clipper Correspondent Silky Sensations has a new home in North Salt Lake at 225 North Hwy. 89. The business, which offers silk plants and trees as well as an extensive selection of silk flower arrangements, was started four years ago by two sisters, JeNan Page and Kaeleen Garrick. Four years ago their mother got them interested in the concept of silk flower and plant arrangements when she brought them boxes of greenery and baskets she had bought in Arizona. Working with the materials was a new experience for the girls. "You have to pull it out and shape it and clip it and put it in baskets with moss. We started doing it for mother and pretty soon all the neighbors, friends and family saw what we were doing and asked if we would make some for them too," JeNan Page said. "Pretty soon we were doing for everybody so we decided to sell it. We got a business license and found a wholesale house. The flowers and leaves are imported from Oriental countries. Our wholesaler says just because you order a certain thing it doesn't mean that's what you get. Every box is a surprise." First they did a silk plant garage sale. "We sold everything we made and then started taking orders," she said. Later they changed their business to Woods Cross. With their father's help, they got set up in a garage and did great for three summers. Then one day a lady stopped to ask if they would do a wedding. "We said why not. She talked to us in June and the wedding wasn't until September 14 so we had lots of time. The lady said we were an answer to a prayer." That first wedding was in a back yard in Centcrville. "We purchased the things we needed," Page said. "Dad (Ron Brodrick) made a gazebo and a wishing well. Our wishing well has real fish and lily pads." A lot of their orders come from people who have seen their work. "We did a wedding on a church patio once. A neighbor came over to see what we did because she couldn't believe we could make it look good. Later, when her daughter got married, she came to us." Now that Silky Sensations has found a new home, the sisters are offering an even larger selection of silk plants and trees. Weddings, however, are still a bN thing too. "And as the weather has started to warm uJ we are getting more and more people who want to get their homes and patios ready for Easter and the spring season," said JeNan Page. Silky Sensations has videos of some of the weddings the company have done so the customers can see the work. "We have done yards, a city hall and every ward in CenterviUe. We meet with the person and go to the location and make a diagram so we all agree on what is being done. We do all the setup, decoration and the cleanup." It's really a satisfying business when things turn out the way you want them to, she said. "When we started, we didn't have any idea it would be so much fun." The phone number for the new store is 298-9667. Future plans for the store include adding an area when other local women can display and sell their crafts. |
