Linda Hamilton, of Centerville, purchased 37-year-old Queenie seven years ago when the owner was considering selling the horse to "a Vietnamese family for Thanksgiving dinner." Even Hamilton's husband who, she said, is not really a horse person couldn't accept that end, so the couple purchased the mare. Hamilton said the mare falls every so often, but she still gets around all right and holds her own in occasional fights with other horses. Last autumn, the Hamiltons considered putting the old bay down, but were talked out of it by stable owners Blaine and Marge Carr. "If she gets to where she's starting to suffer, we'll put her down, but she really does well," Hamilton explained. (Clipper photo by Jennifer Peterson) L |
