Prominent Mapleton couple to observe golden wedding date Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Whiting, well-known residents of Mapleton, Maple-ton, will celebrate their golden wedding at an open house, given giv-en by their sons and daughters, Saturday, January 20, from 5 to 8 p.m., at the Mapleton Ward Relief Society Room. An invitation is extended friends and relatives to attend. Mr. and Mrs. Whiting were married January 23, 1918, in the Salt Lake Temple and are the parents of seven sons and daughters all of whom with their wives and husbands, plan to attend the wedding anniversary anniver-sary party. They include, Ray S., Virginia and Juan Whiting of Mapleton; James Gary Whiting Whi-ting of Whittier, Calif.; Mrs. Heber (Joyce) Olsen of Tempe, Ariz.; Mrs. Donald (Thora) Allan Al-lan and Marilyn Whiting of New York City. There are also 29 grandchildren and one great grandson. The Whitings have made their home in Mapleton throughout their married lives, taking active part in church and civic affairs. Mrs. Mary Whiting is a native na-tive of Pickney, N.C., born to Ruffin and Mary M. Sullivan. She resided in Petersburg and Richmond, Va., before moving with her family to Salt Lake City. She has been especially active in LDS Church work having held positions in Relief Society, Sunday School, MIA and Primary. She also served as a Republican county delegate dele-gate from the Mapleton district. dis-trict. In 1959, she was named district "Mother of the Year." Mr. Whiting, a son of Albert Al-bert Milton and Harriet Perry Whiting was born in Mapleton and has lived there always. He was mayor for six years and has also served as bishop of his ward. He has been patriarch patri-arch of Kolob Stake since 1951. In his early life, he filled an LDS mission to the southern states and it was at this time he met his wife, although they were not married until several years later. He has followed farming and ranching throughout through-out his life. |
