Red Devils end Provo winning streak with 71-70 thriller Ron Bird proved to be the hero again as Springville's Red Devils sent the Bulldogs home with their tails between their legs after upsetting the visitors visi-tors 71-70 in a rafter-shaking finish here Wednesday night. Bird sank the winning bucket with one of his hook shots after af-ter Provo had practically cinched cin-ched the game with less than a half minute to play, but Roi came up with the big bertha with less than ten seconds to go to give the Red Devils the big win of the year. Springville's win was anything any-thing but a one-man effort. The entire team played the kind of ball that was expected expect-ed of the Devils all season. Big Gary Nielson came into his own with a sterling performance per-formance as did Bill Allred and Richard Thorpe along with leading scorer, Ron Bird. This foursome accounted for 19 points for Bird, 17 for Nielson, 16 for Allred and 13 for Thorpe. Richard Thorpe, Gary Nielson Niel-son and Ron Bird shot the Devils into a 10-4 lead to start the game out and with Allred coming in for his share of points, the Devils led the Bulldogs Bull-dogs throughout the contest except that Provo did move ahead once, 37-36 on a shot by big Jim Reese after the second half began. They went ahead at the beginning of the final quarter but Nielson and Allred pulled the Devils back in the front and not 'til John Weight of Provo knotted the count late in the last quarter at 68-68 68-68 and Benson hit a foul shot did the Bulldogs get ahead again, 70-69 just seconds before be-fore the game ended with Bird's sensational final basket which turned the gym into a frenzy of cheers. The win over Provo was the first league game the Bulldogs had lost since 1960 and thus Coach Hal Jensen's Red Devils ended one of the longest game victory records made by the Bulldogs.
