Show I ' rLetter to the editor j .! Reader points ;; to need j for recreation V Is there any possibility to nuild a new community center ...or a great many functions be-ides be-ides a show house? Other communities com-munities have this desire, why Ian't we? The city council felt a need 3r new buildings that were not as near in need for repairs as the Rivoli Theatre, and we agreed. We are proud of these buildings build-ings and we want to be just as proud of our recreation centers cen-ters (teenagers will respect a new building much more than an old one). I am proud that the Orem bookkeeping problem the city will have to keep track of. I appreciate beauty and creation; cre-ation; most people do. I fee sure that something could b worked out and a new social growth developed. Twila Newbury master degree in recrea tion, minor in education Recreation Department is willing will-ing to help us select good pictures; pic-tures; their program in recreation recrea-tion is great and is continually growing. If they can do it, why can't we? Our city is one of which to be proud. We have good homes; we keep our yards green and beautiful with flowers; we are a clean city; and we have more contractors in Springville than any city in America the size of Springville. These contractors have studied stud-ied aesthelics, the philosophy that deals with beauty. They know that leisure is a slice of time and recreation is putting that time to constructive use. Our people know this is true also, therefore, we know that we need a community center. We know anything worthwhile costs. That cost could be reduced re-duced with some free labor. Let us put our shoulder to the wheel for the new not the old. We are grateful for this group of women who has started start-ed this drive for more recreation recrea-tion facilities, but I believe they have not done enough studying study-ing for so great a project. Citizens I am sure could be persuaded to donate material, equipment, and money. With the help of consolidated group organizations, we could have a community center that would demonstrate good citizenship. A beautiful new city recreation recrea-tion building with activities of various kinds, can refresh worn minds and spirits. As has been quoted, "all work and no play is not the American way." Now if we remodel the old Rivoli Theatre, we still have a worn building and worn machinery. mach-inery. Besides, the seating capacity cap-acity is already too small to serve a growing community. Has anyone done some research and found how many times the roof has been fixed unsuccessfully? unsuccess-fully? "All" the chairs are stained, in need of repair, or replacement. The walls have been water soaked from the leaky roof and needs redecorating, redecor-ating, etc., etc., etc. Another issue is the 75c added add-ed on to "all" people's monthly light bills. There should be a few exemptions, such as people who are on public welfare, olc people who are getting smal pensions, crippled and sick people peo-ple who are barely making e living, and perhaps others. And if these people were tt be considered look at the greai |
