Show Local prepsters named to all-state teams SALT LAKE CITY -The Salt Lake Tribune and Deseret News ' anounced Sunday their 1981 Utah All-State teams and several outstanding southern Utah athletes were among those selected to the honorable teams. Heading the southern Utah selections was Beaver's Donnie Roberts, named the Class 1-A Most Valuable Player by both papers for his contribution as a running back and linebacker in the Beaver's march to an unexpected 1-A championship. Roberts was an outstanding senior and leader on the young. Beaver championship team. The 170-pound dynamo was the leading rusher for the Beavers and was a leader on defense for coach Al Marshall's squad. Roberts played a key role in the Beaver's attainment of another State title, conquering the favored Kanab Cowboys in. the final game conducted in Provo at the Brigham Young University stadium. Other area All-State selections included Cedar City's Danny Bulloch. The 195-pound senior was selected by the Tribune to the 1981 team as an offensive lineman and by the Deseret News to their second team. Bulloch also played on the defensive line for the Redmen and was an outstanding performer both ways. The fireplug was a leader on the 1981 CHS team that went undefeated in Region 8 play before dropping a playoff game to the Orem Tigers. Bulloch was more than most defensive linemen could handle last season and was a vital cog in a potent Cedar High offense. He was selected as the State Bank-Iron County Record Player of the Week several times during the season. ' Linebacker Don Adams of Cedar City was selected by the Tribune to their All-State second team and was named All-Region All-Region by the News. Adams, a 6-1, 201 pound linebacker was a tackling leader for the Redmen throughout last season and a also performed well in the fullback slot. Other class 1-A All-Staters All-Staters included several members of the Beaver Beavers championship squad. Offensive linemen Ken Stoker and Scott Stucki were All-State picks, and receiver Robbie Eyre was also selected by the Tribune. Stoker and Eyre were first-team Deseret News picks and Stucki and Steve Hutchings were honored on the News' second team. Scott Yardley, a superb defensive back for the Beavers, was selected by the Trib to their 1-A All-State All-State defensive team. Yardley was outstanding in his pass coverage in the final championship game against Kanab. Milfords' Ephie Tolman was selected by the Deseret News to their All-State team and Laney Johnson was named to the second team by the News. Tolman and Blair Coon were named to the second team by the Tribune, along with Randie Rose. The Deseret News, in addition to their All-State teams, named two All-Region All-Region squads. Six Cedar High players were given All-Region honors in Region 8 including Don Adams, Ben Whitney, Kevin Garrett and Andy Parry to the first team. Emron Tripp and Scott Carter were named to the second team. . .A slew of local players in Region 12 were honored on the Deseret News All-Region team. First-team selections included Blair Coon, Kip Sherwood and Chad Hardy of Milford and Alan Smith, Scott Yardley ;. and Paul Robinson from Beaver. Second-teamers included Doug Rogerson and Robbie Stevens of Parowan; Scott Brinkman and Reagan Puffer of Milford and Chris Branvall, Eric Dotson and Thayne Marshall from Beaver. |
