Show Anonymous letters Opinions should be signed Anonymous letters they really kind of bug me, I must confess. Actually they shouldn't, I suppose, because none of the letters ever sent to the Record come to me. However all those "Dear Editor" letters or "Honorable Editor" or any one of numerous superlatives used to address our fearless editor that come, express a point, then ask that their name be withheld just kind of bug me. In my opinion, and this isn't necessarily the view of the paper, if it's worth saying, it's worth signing. Every other week yours truly, or truly yours if your prefer, sits down and drums up a column. And every other week this funny, hypergraphically inverted, overdeveloped reverse dark-roomed dark-roomed touched-up picture-with my name by it goes with my column. There have been several columns wind up in the garbage for that very reason. I have to be responsible for what I say. Thus, it had better be decently (not well) written and represent my feelings and thoughts in a semi-responsible way. fMike Cannon those letters will keep coming and hopefully more of them will be published with a responsible name attached. It takes time and some effort to sit down and voice one's views by pen and that effort is admirable. It takes little more time to include a signature and makes the view expressed much more weighty, impacting and worthwhile. It's kind of like being afraid to ask the "dumb question" in a classroom setting. ..Upon asking it, we are surprised to find many others were thinking the same way. Generally, others respect the person, leading out without anonymity. People may hate, love or ignore what's written, but it's nice to see someone accept responsibility for what they say. Generally people really respect that, though they might not like or agree with what's said. . Granted, there are certain times it's appropriate to withhold a name on a letter to the editor or any other written work. I don't know when they are, but it seems this should be the rare exception and not the cowering rule. Let me clarify one important thing. The paper will certainly withhold names on letters to the editor or other items if it is requested. Hopefully The Record welcomes letters from all responsible individuals or groups. Letters should be typed or printed neatly, double spaced. Also no letters will be printed that are not signed. However, if the writer requests, with good reason, that his name be withheld from publication that request will be honored. |
