Show Mayor empowered to negotiate contract CEDAR CITY - "It's unusual for people to call me up and say good things about what we're doing, but all the calls that I've received have been positive," commented Cedar City Mayor Jack Sawyers in a special City Council meeting on Nov. 24. During the meeting, the Council unanimously passed a resolution which empowers the mayor to sign and negotiate terms for purchasing the Prudential building on Main Street with a lease option agreement. The building will be used for City offices. The calls Sawyers received were about the decision the City has made to purchase the building. City Attorney Robert Braithwaite explained to the Council that the building will be purchased with a lease option that will be renewable each year. 'Tho maunr uill cian flnH pntpr intn a lease purchase option with either one, two or three banks," said Braithwaite, "then certificates of participation will be issued." Sawyers suggested that the City take revenue sharing money as it comes in to pay off the purchase as soon as possible. Councilman Harold Shirley commented that by combining the present tenants' rent money with the revenue sharing money, "that thing will be paid off in no time at all." The City took possession of the Prudential building on Dec. 1. Commenting on the present meeting place, Councilman Jack Carter said, "the quicker we get out of here, the better."
