Show Parowan plans annual winter carnival PAROWAN The First Annual Parowan Chamber of Commerce Winter Carnival will be Dec. 18 and 19 with a variety of activities centered around the Christmas holiday and spirit. The activities will begin Dec. 18 with a dance at the Parowan High gymnasium from 8 to 10 p.m. Nostalgic music will be provided by the Paragonah Orchestra. Refreshments will be served, and the event is supported by the Daughters of the Utah Pioneers, the Sons of the Utah Pioneers and the Parowan Senior Citizens. This will be followed by a contemporary dance from 10:30 p.m. until 1 a.m., also in the gym. The music will be provided by "Souled Out." Refreshments will be served, and the dance is supported by the Parowan Lions Club and Lady Lions. The activities will continue Saturday with snowmobile drags 15 miles south of Parowan on State Highway 143, adjacent to Cedar Breaks National Monument. Tech starts at 9 a.m., with races beginning at 10:30 a.m. There will be classes for A, B, C, modified and ladies powder puff. Trophies will be given winners in each class. Entry blanks are available in any sporting goods store from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. They are also available for local merchants or from the Chamber of Commerce by writing LeAnn Miller, Box 298, Parowan, Utah, telephone 477-9982. In the afternoon there will be movies for the children at the Parowan High School auditorium. They will start at 3 p.m. and will be followed immediately by a visit from Santa Claus, who will bring goodies for all the kids. There will also be a gala festival in the student commons and mail halls of . the school. It will start at 2:30 p.m. and will feature booths rented to clubs, individuals and businesses which will have home-made wares for sale, including antiques, handcrafted items, Christmas candy and cakes, cookies, canned goods, quilts, paintings and stained glass. In addition, there will also be essay contests in the Parowan Elementary School, with the subject "My Idea of a Parowan Winter Carnival." There will also be a tree decorating contest in the Parowan High School, with classes competing with each other for awards. Also, all merchants have been encouraged to dress up their store fronts and assist in decorating the trees on Parowan's Main Street. Also, the Chamber of Commerce is encouraging all citizens of Parowan to decorate their homes for the holidays. Public recognition will be given for the best three homes. According to Chamber Vice President Brenda Adams, part of the purpose of the carnival is "to offer . everyone a day or two of family togetherness, to offer every civic organization! club, school class, church, business and individual the opportunity to become lightly involved or tp become strongly active." |
