Bennett has also appeared in several community theater productions, among them "The King and I," "Oliver," "A Christmas CEDAR CITY The holiday season's infamous Mr. Scrooge, called "a squeezing, wrenching, grasping, scraping, clutching, covetous old sinner "by his maker Charles Dickens, will come to life Dec. 14-15 at Southern Utah State College through the talents of Utah actor Michael Jesse Bennett. Bennett's one-man show "An Evening With Charles Dickens" will include the timelss tale "A Christmas Carol" along with readings from "David Copperfield" and "Pickwick Papers." Like Dickens, who read his works in public for many years, Bennett works through readers' theater, giving his SUSC students will also pay $3 to see the show. A special family rate has been set at $10. Along with the evening performances curtain at 8 p.m. in the SUSC Auditorium Bennett will be offering a special workshop Dec. 15 from 10 a.m. to noon for SUSC theater students and others interested in acting as a profession. Bennett has taken his "Evening With Charles Dickens" most recently to Weber State College, Idaho State University, Boise State University and Northwest Nazarene College. He has been reading Dickens for 12 years, taking "A Christmas Carol" as a one-man show to California, Arizona, Wyoming, Indiana and Pennsylvania. "Southern Utah audiences have seen Mr. Bennett here on stage but in very different roles," Phillips explained. "He was an equity guest artist this summer with the Utah Shakespearean Festival, playing Leonata in 'Much Ado About Nothing' and Polonius in 'Hamlet.'" Bennett also played Bela in the USF's matinee performance "The Guardsman" which toured earlier as a Pioneer State Theater Foundation production. He was also seen in a Pioneer State production of "The Show-off" which toured southern Utah a year earlier. The guest performer's 1 characters their own voice and personality. Dressed in a tuxedo-as was Dickens he uses Dickens' techniques to make the show more of a dramatic production than a reading. "We are very fortunate to have Mr. Bennett at SUSC, especially at Christmas time since his program is so closely akin to the holiday season," said R. Scott Phillips, theater public relations director. Tickets are on sale for "An Evening With Charles Dickens" at the SUSC Box Office, 586-7876, 586-7876, from 1 to 5 p.m. weekdays.
