Show SU plans opera broadcast intermission. Edward Downes will mark his 24th season as quizmaster. The fifth most performed opera in the Metropolitan's repertory, "Tosca" is based on the melodrama by Victorien Sardou and owes much of its early popularity to Sarah Bernhardt who created the role and played it for more than 20 years. Puccini first saw her in the role in 1889 and was immediately struck by the operatic possibilities of the work: a story that contains an opera singer's thwarted love affair, a political escapee, a murder, an execution and a suicide. CEDAR CITY - The 42nd season of Texaco-Metropolitan Texaco-Metropolitan Opera Radio broadcasts will open Dec. 5 with a broadcast of Giacomo Puccini's "Tosca" live from the stage of the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. The performance will be heard locally at noon over KGSU-FM, the Southern Utah State College radio station. Singing principal roles will be Carol Neblett as Tosca, Jose Carreras as Cavaradossi, Sherrill Milnes as Scarpia, and Renato Capecchi as the Sacristan. Giuseppe Patane will conduct. This opening performance will inaugurate the 42nd consecutive season of Texaco's sponsorship of these Saturday broadcasts, the longest continuous underwriting of the same program by the same sponsor in broadcasting history. During the first of the two intermissions in "Tosca," "Opera News on the Air" will return with Alberta Masiello presenting a background discussion of "Tosca" with musical illustrations. Texaco's "Opera Quiz" will have its season premiere during the second |
