Show District Court action Reed says he's 6 not guilty9 PAROWAN William Kent Reed, accused of kidnapping a Cedar City police officer, pleaded not guilty to three felony counts Tuesday in Fifth District Court here. Reed was arraigned before Judge Maurice D. Jones, and entered the pleas to charges of attempted criminal homicide, murder in the first degree; Tomas Enrique Benedetti pleaded not guilty to a charge of theft by deception, a Class A misdemeanor. The charge had been reduced from a second degree f felony. Judge Jones ordered that the case be set for review at the law and motion day Jan. 4. Hanna Rebluud appeared for sentencing on a conviction of writing a bad check, a third degree felony. She was sentenced to 30 days in the Iron County Jail. The sentence was suspended on completion on one year's probation. She was also ordered to pay a $150 fine within 60 days. Deborah Isom Twitchell also appeared for sentencing, for production of a controlled substance. She was sentenced to 30 days in the Iron County Jail, suspended upon completion of one year's probation and payment of a $50 fine within 30 days. within the next 45 days be set. Reed is being held in lieu of $300,000 bail in the Washington County Jail. If convicted, he could face 11 years to life in the Utah State Penitentiary. In other action this week in the District Court, Kirk Wall was found not guilty by a jury of eight on charges of assault on a child, a second degree felony. The jury trial took the bigger part of the day Monday. In still other action, Billy Gene Baldwin, Jr., appeared for sentencing on charges he had earlier pleaded guilty to. The charges were two of obtaining possession of a controlled substance by deception, third degree felonies; a and one of burglary, a second degree felony. Judge Jones ordered a 90-day diagnostic evaluation at the Utah State Hospital before sentencing. aggravated kidnapping; and aggravated robbery. The charges arise from an incident on Oct. 26 when Reed allegedly took Officer Glen Miller of the Cedar City Police Department hostage when Miller tried to stop him for a suspected vehicle theft. Iron County Attorney James L. Shumate has charged that Reed took Miller hostage at gunpoint and drove south with him to Las Vegas in another officer's stolen car. The attempted criminal homocide charge arises out of the alleged firing of Miller's service revolver during a scuffle between himself and Reed. Judge Jones ordered that a trial date |
