Show Cardiac kids gliyioii squeaker By MIKE CANNON Sports Writer SPRING VILLE "We've been through this before, these guys don't quit," sighed Dave Jenson, Cedar High football coach, following the Reds 23-22 victory over a tough Springville team last weekend to clinch the Region 8 title. "Anytime you can beat a good team like that on the road, you must be doing something right," Jenson continued. Doing something right? Was Noah right when he built the ark? The Reds manage to do something right nearly every time they take the field. What they do right is win, regardless of the circumstances or overwhelming odds. i Going into last weeKenas game, Springville had only one region loss and a win over Cedar would have left the two schools : in H tie for the league crown. Springville would have gone into post-season play as the number on Region 8 team. But, alas, all these "ifs" never came to be as the cardiac kids from Cedar worked one of their miraculous finishes and pulled-off the slender win. With only about 2:30 left in the contest, con-test, the Redmen had the ball on their own 14 yard-line trailing 22-20. A gutsy, poised drive by the Reds took them down into Red Devil territory where kicker Andy Parry booted a 32-yard field goal with only :22 left. The result-23-22 for Cedar City and a league title. Cedar had to pick up several first downs on the drive, including one on a fourth and fifteen situation. They dug deep and did what they had to do, with quarterback Kevin Garrett doing some good running, along with completing a couple of passes. Things didn't look real sticky for the Redmen early in the game. They drew first blood with 8:52 left in the first quarter when Garrett scored on a two-yard two-yard run, capping a 52-yard drive following the opening kickoff. Parry was successful with the PAT and it was 7-0. With 11:00 left in the second stanza, Springville scored on a 25-yard TD pass. That, combined with the PAT, tied things at seven. Cedar took the kick and lost yardage due to penalties and mistakes. Garrett was subsequently called with grounding groun-ding in the Cedar City end zone, giving Springville two points and a safety. CHS managed a score with less than a minute in the half, following a nice drive, mostly through the air. Garrett hit K.C. Jones with three passes on the drive and ultimately hit Ben Whitney with a 15-yard TD toss. In the second half, Cedar recovered a Springville fumble early and Whitney packed it in from six yards out. It was now 20-9 for the Redmen as the PAT was blocked. Springville took the ball and scored following a 45-yard pass play. "That really seemed to spark them," said Jenson. Now the score was 20-16, Reds. Cedar fumbled the kickoff and the Red Devils recovered on the CHS 25. They promptly scored and missed the point after, leaving the score at 22-20 in favor of the Devils. Things looked bleak for the Redmen but the boys of autumn managed to work their magic and Parry did his usual fine kicking job. Redmen fans can see the first postseason post-season game tomorrow at 3 p.m. when Cedar hosts Orem on the CHS field. 1 itl' " Wii r r ii'-' Vi f-ifrinfAi in "inmiii hiiimihIiii n it "si in I Bombs away!
