Show Industrial Committee cheered ; towards a private developer In a time when people are turning away from government for a solution of all their problems, the Iron County Record commends the members of the Cedar City Industrial Park Committee for following suit. Members of the Committee are leaning towards hiring a private developer to plan and implement an industrial park rather than turning it over to Ceda r City, and we hope tha t such becomes the final decision of the Committee. The other choice open to the group is to have the City finance and develop the park. However, with high interest rates and the Federal and State governments cutting back on grants to municipalities, the financing of such could end up being extremely expensive. The developer of the park is going to need to install in-stall utilities and construct streets. He may also ' need to build buildings and lease them back to the industries that move in. Such a task for the City could be far too expensive. On the other hand, a developer could be hired that would most probably do an excellent job of building and promoting the project. The Committee has already stated that they would check credentials carefully and make sure that whoever is hired, if the decision is finalized, has a good "track record." We also support the Committee members and their statements that they plan on being "choosy" about which industries come into the proposed park. And we will remind them of that promise in the future. We all want industrial growth in Iron County, but we want clean compatible industry. To accomplish that the Committee and the City must keep some control of what happens at the park, even if a private developer is hired. Guidelines must be set down, and the City must have the final say on everything that happens. Once again, we support the efforts of the various groups in the County which are trying to bring industry in-dustry and moderate growth to the area. |
