Show Fertilizer research increases crop yields With the increased amount of research which is taking place with the fertilizer ' industry, many new products are coming on the market to help increase crop yields. Just average yields will not keep the farmer in business, and scientists are gearing their research projects toward higher yields, according to Mr. Beckstrand of the Utah Department of Agriculture. The Utah fertilizer law was recodified and passed by the 1979 Legislature. The law now regulates soil ammendments as well as fertilizers. Soil ammendments am-mendments have become widely used and advertized as fertilizers. This law now provides considerable protection to the consumer. All fertilizers and soil ammendments offered for sale in Utah must be registered with the Utah Department of Agriculture annually. It is the responsibility respon-sibility of that agency to see that those products are properly labeled and that they contain the plant nutrients which are guaranteed on the label. In the case of soil am-mendemtn am-mendemtn materials, the manufacturer must supply proff of the clained benefits before the products can be registered for sale in Utah. ' There are presently about 900 fertilizer products registered in the state of Utah for use by the farmers and the home owners to produce food, and beautify our buildings and homes. According to Mr. Beckstrand, if a person questions the validity of efficacy of a fertilizer or soil amendment being offered for sale he should contact the local agricultural inspector or the Salt Lake office of the Utah Department of Agriculture. |
