Show Flood Warning Issued by Local Officials Public officials and irrigation company representatives warn of potential flooding in various parts of Iron County due to the unusually high mountain snow pack. The areas that are particularly likely to experience flooding are Escalante, Cedar and Parowan valleys. Mid-April surveys by the Soil Conservation Service indicate that amounts of moisture in the mountains of the county range from about 180 percent to 215 percent of normal. This amount of moisture provides the potential for both brief and even prolonged f flows that exceed the carrying capacity of creeks, canals and ditches, most likely in late April and May. Extra precautions and preparations have been taken to alleviate the possible damage by irrigation, city, county and state officials. But in addition property owners near the flood channels and ditches and those located in traditional flood plains should take necessary precautionary measures to minimize flood damage. Potential flood damage to homes is especially high in Cedar Valley-southwest, Valley-southwest, west and north of the Cedar City airport and west of Fiddlers Fid-dlers Canyon. Irrigation officials warn against unauthorized tampering with headgates or other diversionary structures, particularly during periods of high water flows or flooding. The county has sacks for sandbagging sand-bagging . for anyone in the county who may need them. Sacks may be obtained by contacting the Iron County Sheriff's Department. Jerry Bryant of Coal Creek Irrigation Company has been designated the mobile of icer to watch for flooding in the West Cedar Valley area. Agreements have been arranged so that equipment from private individuals, in-dividuals, the county, the state and the Army Corps of Engineers will be made available in the event of major flooding in the county. |
