Show CHS Tennis Team Split The Cedar. High Redmen tennis team opened the 1980 season last week playing two matches, winning one match and losing one match. On Thurs. April 17 the Cedar Redmen defeated the Dixie Flyers tennis team in St. George 4 to 1. Cedar also won an exhibition doubles match. The results were: No. 1 singles, John Aldred (D) def. Lane Stobbe (C) 7-5, 6-2. No. 2 singles Stuart Jones (C) def. Laird Washburn (D) 6-1, 6-1. No. 3 singles Jim Parks (C) def. Phil Theobald (D) 7-5, 7-5, 6-3. No. 1 doubles, Neil Mathews-Brad Giles (C) def. James Stout-Scott Searle (D) 6-1, 6-0. No. 2 doubles, Gary Gregerson-Steve Shirts (C) def. Keith Wenzel-Blake Mortenson (D) 6-1, 6-0. Exhibition doubles, William Tsun-Brad Chambers (C) def. Delray Scott-Todd Maxwell (D) 6-1, 6-1. The Redmen dropped their opening match to the Kanab Cowboys three matches to two. The decision didn't come until the final match of the day. With the team score tied at two matches each, Cedar High's No. 1 doubles team of Neil Mathews and Steve Shirts battled for two hours before losing the tiebreaker tie-breaker in the third set. Winners for the Redmen against Kanab included Stuart Jones at No. 2 singles and Jim Parks-Lance Dennett as No. 2 doubles. Lane Stobbe of Cedar lost the No. 1 singles match to Walt Prisbrey of Kanab, and Gary Gregerson lost the No. 3 singles match. William Tsun won an exhibition match which did not count toward the team score. The Cedar Team is scheduled to play a dual match with Parowan Wednesday, April 23. and a return match with Dixie on the Cedar High Courts on May 2. The Region 6 tournament will be played at Timpview High School May 7 and 8 with the 3-A State meet set for Weber State on May 16 and 17. |
