Show Jones won't run for House Seat Calling it a "Tough Decision", republican representing Kane and Iron Counties serving in the Utah House of Representatives, Garth Jones has decided against running for what could have been his fifth consecutive con-secutive term in that office. Jones qualified his announcement , saying that he would consider running for that office again if a viable candidate can-didate doesn't file for the Republican slot for that office in next November's election, " ...... .. . : " . L Secretary of the Cedar City Chamber of Commerce and bishop of his ward. He also explained that his term does not expire until Dec. 31 and that constituents with problems which he might be able to help with should continue to contact him. Having served at various times. as the house's Majority Whip and as Assistant Whip, Jones said that he has also served on the Governor's Tax Committee, the Western States Natural Resource Committee, and has been an active spokesman for small business, tourism, the funding of the Iron County Mission State Park, Southern Utah State College and an advocate of local government. He also served as Chairman of the state's Natural Resources Appropriations Committee for the past two years. "I did not sponsor a lot of bills but I feel that I have almost been more of a service to my constituents by not sponsoring specific bills. I was active in energy research, water issues and was prominent in the rural block of representatives who worked together to get a lot of legislation favorable to the state's less populated areas passed," said Jones in reviewing his work in the house. Jones' spoke in support of the four consitutional amendments which will defnitely be included on Nov.'s election. They concern prison release programs, women working in underground un-derground .... mines, increases in expense allotments for state : legislators, reorganization of some state offices and a tax amendment. "I thank the people of southern Utah who are as good as people from anywhere in the state, nation or world. I have felt that serving in the legislature has been a great opportunity op-portunity and am proud that I have served there... I believe in the future of southern Utah," concluded Jones. GARTH JONES He also stated that he intends to continue being active in politics and will probably consider running for public office in the future. He said that his reasons for deciding not to run this November included needing more time to spend with his family and teenage children and having too many "irons in the fire" between his work as Executive |
