Show SPORTS FLASHBACKS Uintah Utes drop hoop encounter to Carbon A basketball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Dec. 12, 1946., UTES LOSE HOOP OPENER TO CARBON HIGH The lid was formally pried off the 1946-47 basketball season here last Friday when the Dinosaurs from Carbon High School edged the Uintah Hieh School five, 16-13, in a tight defensive battle played at the Uintah high gym. The game was the first this season for - both teams and was marked with some typical early season lack of polish on the part of each team. The Utes took an early lead but were overhauled before the end of the first quarter by the Carbon quint. From that point on the boys from Price maintained a lead and at one time had a five point advantage, although the Utes pulled up to within two points, one minute before the gun. Coach Frank Wright played two full teams for approximately the same amount of time, without any apparent difference in their effectiveness. Sam " Snyder, Bert Carroll, Ernest Weeks, DeMar Duval and Bert Johnson composed one Ute five and Bob Williams, Richard Lewis, Toby Wilkins, Glen Hatch and Ralph Bryson were the other combination. i Wilkins was the only individual on either team who scored more than once, making two field goals and a foul pitch for five points and high point honors. Carbon used a set play screen system to make possible several good set shots. Therein lay their margin of victory. Lindstorm and Nord looked very good for the Carbon crew. Tatton was the top scorer for the Dinosaurs at four points, during the disastrous series. Another basketball story follows as it was printed in the Vernal Express on Dec. 19, 1946. |
