Historical Society to present program on blacks "Negro Bill Canyon" named after William Granstaff; "Beckwourth Pass" named after James P. Beckwourth, Isom Dart and Nat Love alias "Deadwood Dick"; the "Buffalo Soldiers" who were these historic figures from Utah's past? The Uintah Historical Society will feature "Blacks in Utah History", a historical slide-tape program on Tuesday, July 13 at 8 p.m. at the Golden Age Center, 135 South 100 West in Vernal. You will learn about Blacks who were fur trappers and frontier explorers, 1847 pioneers and settlers, the U.S. Army troops stationed at Fort Duchesne and Fort Douglas, cowboys, railroad workers and prospectors. This program is made possible by a grant from the Utah Endowment for the Humanities and co-sponsored by the Utah State Historical Society-Museum Society-Museum Services, the Uintah Historical Society, the Utah State Office of Education-Title IV-CRA Program, the Advisory Committee on Education for Black Students, and the Black Ethnic Study guide Curriculum Committee. |
