Lesher, President Chamber of Commerce of the United States Have you often wondered when Mr. Gallup or Mr. Harris would finally get around to calling you for your views on the issues of the day? If you have given up on the prospect of being tapped for one of their scientific samplings in which the press and politicians take such stock, here is your chance to be part of an admittedly unscientific survey. . Please take this opportunity to talk back to me by checking your responses to the following questions. After a reasonable length of time, I'll discuss the results in a future column, and I'll send them to President Reagan and key members of Congress? 1. Which course should Congress pursue to reduce large budget deficits that have been projected for the next several years? raise taxes cut federal spending do both do neither 2. Which view best expresses your own: Congress has already cut spending as much as it can without hurting large number of Americans who depend on government assistance. The surface has barely been scratched. Many more billions in wasteful and unnecessary spending could be cut while still maintaining the social safety net. 3. Should Congress cancel or delay the 10 percent tax cut scheduled to take effect for all taxpayers in July 1983? yes no 4. Which view best expresses your own: The business tax incentives enacted last year amount to an unfair "giveaway" at the expense of the poor. These tax cuts are necessary to encourage business expansion, speed recovery from the recession and create jobs in the private sector. 5. Civilian federal employees, including members of Congress, are not now required to pay into the Social Security system. Should they be required to participate in Social Security along with the rest of the work force? yes no 6. Nearly all analysts agree that Social Security faces a serious financial crisis.
