Clouds moved in by Sunday night at about the time of the Elks club fireworks display and skies stayed overcast through Monday, with temperatures cooling off to below 70 with rain falling by later afternoon. Traffic on area roads was heavy, but considering the higher volume of traffic, traf-fic, accidents and drunken driving JijDLE of balloons, a youngster participates in the July 5 vk? dk0Wn First South. The parade ended at the junior high -flSajnost of the day's-activities focused. . seemed to be no worse than on a normal weekend, said Lt. Howard Powell, Utah Highway Patrol, Vernal. The UHP had every man available patrolling area highways. The patrol for several years has been participating par-ticipating in the Combined Accident Reduction Effort (CARE) with neighboring states. The problem of fireworks igniting fires seems to go hand-in-hand with festivities, though firemen were only busy with that problem Sunday. Vernal firemen responded to a call Sunday morning and five more incidents that night between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m. All were easily controlled, causing no damage, said department spokesman Dewey Paulson. "We had a little more moisture this year, which makes for more grass that dries out," he said. Kids seemed to steal the show during Monday's celebration schedule set up by the Sunrise Lions Club, whether it was the parade, marching seven blocks to the municipal park and swimming pool on 600 West between 100 and 200 South, or the activities at that location, which included bicycle races as well as refreshments and game booths. Kids even braved the cold water of the dunking dunk-ing pool in brisk (for summer) temperatures. Sunrise Lions president Wally God-dard God-dard called the park activities an "overwhelming success," with many more people than he expected showing up. "The community rallied together to provide the activities and to enjoy them." he said. Monday's activities began at 7 a.m. with a rifle salute at the Doughboy Monument in front of the Uintah County Library, performed by Post 124 of the American Legion from Jensen. A flagraising and patriotic service followed at the tabernacle building, 500 West 200 South. The park was dedicated, Independence In-dependence Park, as Girl Scouts presented the colors prior to a ribbon-cutting ribbon-cutting ceremony led by Vernal Mayor Sam Snyder.
